Canada is leaving the UN Convention to Combat Desertification! This seems so crazy to me. We will now be the only country that is not part of the convention, at a time when desertification is a major global problem that is becoming more and more urgent. It seems surprising to me that the federal cabinet could decide something so important without opening it up to debate.

It is so disappointing to see one important institution after another discarded by the federal government. This is yet another venue in which I could have seen myself working in Canada after my Ph.D. – now gone.
